calcium acetate monohydrate formula is a chemical compound. It is also known as acetate of lime. It is a colorless to white crystalline solid with a slight odor of acetic acid. It is soluble in water and alcohol but insoluble in benzene and acetone. Its anhydrous form is very hygroscopic and therefore it is commonly found as the monohydrate. It is obtained by soaking calcium carbonate or hydrated lime in vinegar solution.
It is used to prevent high levels of phosphate in the blood in people with severe kidney disease who are receiving dialysis (medicine that cleans the blood when the kidneys can no longer do it). This medication belongs to a class of medications called phosphate binders. It works by binding phosphate in the digestive tract before it can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
FTIR and XRD results confirmed the purity and solid phase of all the prepared CA samples. Samples prepared from four different concentrations of acetic acid showed similar peaks, which agree well with those reported in literature. The results show that the reaction condition with 60%w/w acetic acid is suitable for producing CA at industrial scale, since it could reduce the production cost significantly. Moreover, it is an environmentally friendly method since scallop shells were used as raw materials for the preparation of CA and bulk industrial grade acetic acid is quite cheap.
