Generally, a neutral atom has the same number of protons (positive charges) as it does of electrons. However, in some cases, the electrons are influenced by electric fields produced by the protons.

Neutrons stabilize the nucleus by countering electrical repulsion between protons and each other. Therefore, a higher ratio of neutrons to protons is required for a stable nucleus.

Electrons also help stabilize the nucleus by forming chemical bonds with other atoms, which can lead to the creation of new elements. Moreover, they are important in determining the properties of a material, such as its strength, ductility, density, conductivity and shape.

Hence, it is essential to know the number of protons and electrons in an atom. This can be done by calculating the atomic number, which is the total number of protons and electrons in an element.

The atomic number of livermorium is 116. It is a p-block transactinide element and belongs to group 16 on the periodic table.

It was first discovered in 2000 by a team from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States. It was officially named as livermorium by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 2012.
