The demand for tantalum sheet metal is increasing rapidly in the market due to its wide application in the modern technology industry. Capacitors powering popular devices such as mobile phones, computers and video game systems all contain tantalum, a rare silver-white metallic element. Tantallum is easy to work with at below room temperature and deforms well, especially when cold. Its ductility makes it suitable for cutting, pressing, punching and deep drawing. It is also easy to laser process and is corrosion resistant.
In addition, tantalum and its alloys are easily worked into tubing, thermowells, industrial chemical apparatus and missile and aircraft parts. The ductility and corrosion resistance of tantalum and its alloys make it an ideal choice for the manufacture of medical components such as pacemakers, bone fracture repair plates, screws and surgical instruments.
Tantalum parts can be cleaned in hot chromic acid, typically the solution used to clean glass. The concentration of the solution should be high enough to cause a significant reduction in the thickness of the oxide layer on the part surface, but not so high that it affects the mechanical properties of the tantalum.
