Titanium boride powder, gray or gray-black in color, has a hexagonal crystal structure. It has a high hardness and a melting point of 2980degC. Titanium diboride can withstand 1000°C of oxygen and is stable in HCl or HF acids. Titanium diboride can be used to make composite ceramics. Because it is resistant to corrosion of molten steel, titanium diboride can be used for the manufacturing of molten metallic crucibles as well as electrolytic cell electrodes.

It is the most stable of all boron compounds and titanium. It has a C32 structure and is bound using valence bond. It is a metallicloid compound in the hexagonal system. Its structural parameters are: a = 0.3028nm, and C = 0.3228nm. The crystal structure is made up of the titanium and boron atomic plans. This creates a two-dimensional network structure in which B and three other Bs are combined by covalent bonds. An extra electron creates a large p bond. The TiB’s good electrical conductivity, metallic luster and graphite-like structure of boron atomic layers and Ti outer electrons are due to this graphite-like structure.

This material has high hardness and brilliance because of the Ti-B bonds between the titanium atomic plan and the boron plane.
