Vanadium is a soft, shiny silvery metal found in many different minerals and crude oils. It is resistant to corrosion and is soluble in nitric acid, hydrofluoric and concentrated sulfuric acids. It reacts with alkali to form water-soluble vanadates. Vanadium is also a component of some alloys including high-speed tool steels and some aluminum alloys.
In nature, vanadium exists in four oxidation states: +2, +3, +4, and +5. The most common sources of vanadium are its alloys with aluminum and iron, chemical catalysts, vanadium-enhanced batteries, and specialty steels. Approximately 80% of the vanadium produced is used as an additive to steel for its strength-enhancing, wear-resisting and anti-corrosion properties.
