Platinum is the least reactive of all the noble metals and is highly resistant to corrosion. It is found naturally in a variety of alluvial deposits and is often combined with other elements such as nickel, iron, and copper. This natural stability and its resistance to tarnish and wear make it an attractive choice for fine jewellery.
The most common form of platinum is shiny plated metal, known as "platinum bullion". A more versatile form is platinum sponge (Pt black) that can be dissolved in ammonium chloroplatinate to produce a platinum film or to be used as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen generation in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. It can also be coated onto a solid substrate such as carbon to make an electrode for gas absorption in fuel cells, and it is sometimes used for catalytic ignition of flammable gases to produce "self-lighting" gas lamps.
